The Fillmore Period
“I went to black clubs in San Francisco. I went to the Fillmore when it was still a black club. I saw Bobby “Blue” Bland open for B.B. King. On the second story, they still had barber shops for the guys who wore processed hair. There was a band named Johnny Talbot and De Thangs that opened for all of the blues cats. I got to know Johnny real well. I used to drive up from San Jose and do weird things. I’d play with their band in a black bar in Oakland. When The Airplane got going, I remember taking my 12 string over and playing with their blues band." - Jorma Kaukonen The Jefferson Airplane |

Johnny Talbot and De Thangs were doing music at The Fillmore when it was a black club, owned by Mr. Charles Sullivan. At the new Fillmore, the late rock impressario, Bill Graham booked Johnny Talbot and his band with the Grateful Dead, Chuck Berry, Janis Joplin, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Starship, Otis Redding, and other great artists.
